- Big Bend Saltwater Paddling Trail - South of Tallahassee
A project of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) now formally open, this
trail promises a truly wild escape in the last unmolested stretch of Florida's coastline. Running from the mouth
of the Suwannee to the St. Marks River southeast of Tallahassee, this 105 mile routeis for experienced sea kayakers only,
designed to be completed in nine days, with camping on unihabited Gulf Islands and side trips to lost historic
sites. Beginners and day trippers in the area may want to check out another new project
Apalachicola River Wildlife and Environmental Area Paddling Trail
that explores the river's historic creeks.
- Blackwater River/Royal Palm Hammock Creek Canoe Trail - South of Naples
A manageable dip into the pleasures of the everglades and their Ten Thousand Islands, this 13 mile trail moves at an unhurried
pace that lets paddlers sit back and sharpen their eyes for wood storks, black bears and brown pelicans among others.
- Coldwater Creek Canoe Trail - East Panhandle (Pensacola area)
Just one of many trails near Milton in Northwest Florida, this is an 18 mile run through the Blackwater River
State Forest that is popular for overnight trips: paddlers beach their craft and camp on the numerous sandbars.
- Great Calusa Blueway - Fort Myers area
Offshore paddling of a gentler nature is availableon this splendid route in southwest Florida, close
to Fort Myers. The meandering trail ducks in and around numerous rivers, creeks and mangrove islands in its
two sections; The southern half is centered on Estero Bay, while the northern end explores Sanibel, Captiva
and Pine Island Sound.
- Loxahatchee River Canoe Trail - West of Palm Beach
As proof that you're never far from the wildside, even in developed south Florida, exhibit a would be this
eight mile trail, just a few minutes from downtown West Palms Beach. Florida's first National Wildlife
and Scenic River, the Loxahatchee provides a refuge for many orchid species and 140 varieties of birds.
- Santa Fe River Canoe Trail - Northern Central (Gainesville area)
Access to the famous, crystal clear Ichetucknee River is one selling point here, but this 26 mile,
beginner friendly trail near Gainesville in north central Florida has many other simple
pleasures, including the sight of young alligators sunning themselves on the banks.
- Suwannee River Wilderness Trail - North Central on Georgia Border
Canoeists and Kayakers who favor multi-week tours will love this nearly 200 mile route that follows the river's path from
the Georgia border to its rendezvous with the Gulf. Developed "river camps" on the sugar sand banks are supplemented by
rental cabins at several sites along the way, starting at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park in White Springs.
